A Member of the State of Osun House of Assembly, representing Obokun constituency, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye has advocated for the institutionalization of support systems for the Aged as part of social security intervention.
He made the call in Otan-Ile on Wednesday while distributing items such as clothes and cash to the aged.
The event also witnessed distribution of farm inputs to farmers as well as other empowerment materials to the people of his constituency.
It would be recalled that the lawmaker had carried out similar empowerment programme in Ibokun and Ilare, with a promise that the gesture would be replicated in all the wards and major communities of his constituency.
According to him, the condition of the aged which include deepening poverty, discrimination, violence and denial of rights deserved attention, saying that there is need for all stakeholders to complement the care for the senior citizens programme of the state government, tagged Agba Osun.
Noting that African tradition even demands respect for the elderly.
Oyintiloye who expressed concern over the lots of the aged, maintained that the true meaning of Care especially for the elderly is keen attention to include, social attention and nutrition.
He posited that this must also manifest in adequate provision of health-care services, appropriate infrastructure, priority attention in public places and health.
He also stressed the need for the provision of geriatric medicine and gerontology and especially personel in the rural areas.
The lawmaker noted that the aged also suffer economic exclusion, and are often denied opportunities, access to insurance or credit schemes.
According to him, the institutionalization and enactment of legislation to support the senior citizens would give them the desired respect, succour, comfort and therapy they deserved.
He then called on governments, private establishments and individuals to collaborate in ensuring that attention is given to senior citizens not only in Obokun constituency but in the country.
The lawmaker then noted that the idea behind the distribution of items to widows and farm inputs to farmers was to give back to the community.
The Royal Host, Owa Afole of Otan-Ile, Oba Sunday Adegbemi Olamolu commended the lawmaker for the gesture, saying his commitment to grassroot development and concern for the less privileged has made people to recognize him out as a responsible representative of the people.
He gave assurance to others who are yet to benefit that the train will stop in their wards , saying the lawmaker had demonstrated commitment to do more.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Kolapo Alimi said the action was a clear demonstration of love and concern for the people.
He then called on the people to continue to support government gesture towards improving the their lots.
