JUST IN: IGP Lists Requirements Of SWAT Officers, Announces Date For Commencement Of Training

The Inspector General Of Police, Muhammad Adamu has announced the requirements of officers to be trained in the new police tactical team to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

While revealing this in a statement on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, the IGP said the training of selected officers for the Special Weapons and Tactics team would commence on Monday, October 19, 2020.

The IGP noted that no ex-SARS operatives were shortlisted in the SWAT team.

Adamu also explained that “the officers selected for the training are young, smart and energetic officers who have acquired not less than seven (7) years working experience with clean service records – no pending disciplinary matters, no record of violation of rights of citizens or misuse of firearms – and are physically fit to withstand the
rigour of SWAT Training and Operations.

“The selected officers shall be subjected to physical fitness test, medical and toxicology screening etc and those found to be unsuitable shall be discharged.”

According to the statement, “The Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has reaffirmed that the new Police Tactical Team will operate within very high professional and ethical standards, rule of law and dictates of best international policing practices. In pursuant of the above objectives, the NPF is partnering with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other Development Partners for the training of the Tactical Team which commences Monday, 19th October, 2020 at the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Training School, Ila Oragun, Osun State and the PMF Training School, Ende Hills, Nasarawa State.

“The IGP reiterates that no personnel of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) will be a member the new Tactical Team. He notes that the officers selected for the training are young, smart and energetic officers who have acquired not less than seven (7) years working experience with clean service records – no pending disciplinary matters, no record of violation of rights of citizens or misuse of firearms – and are physically fit to withstand the rigour of SWAT Training and Operations. The selected officers shall be subjected to physical fitness test, medical and toxicology screening etc and those found to be unsuitable shall be discharged.

“The ICRC, an independent International human rights and humanitarian support organization with over 71years experience in humanitarian services and institutional support and development, will provide resource persons and materials to handle the human rights components of the training program.

“Specifically, they will handle topics touching on humanitarian laws, police conduct in conflict situation, human rights standard especially in the use of force and firearms, arrest and detention amongst others.

“Other areas of the training program will include modern-day police ethics and values, Intelligence-led policing, Operation planning/Tactical decision making processes, Hostage rescue tactics and operation, weapon handling, first aid/basic life saving skills, stress/fear management, police-citizens relations and emotional intelligence etc. The training modules will be handled by other carefully selected development partners, security experts as well as veterans from the civil society and human rights community.

“The IGP charges the training coordinators to ensure a diligent and timely delivery of the Tactical Team. He observes that the necessity for the immediate establishment of a new Tactical Team is in view of the need to fill voids created by the dissolution of the defunct SARS particularly during the “EMBER Month” traditionally characterized with upsurge in armed robbery and other violent crimes in the country.

“The IGP therefore seeks the cooperation of the citizens in the ongoing development drive for a new and reformed Nigeria Police Force. He enjoins them to be patient and to believe in the reform processes which are all directed at ensuring the security, safety and rights of all.”

  1. I lived in ife osun state months ago before I relocate elsewhere, they’re some police officers in ife that terrorize ife by obtaining money and properties from youth of the town, names of the officers
Twins they’re so identical, one has been transferred, the one in ife rides two different cars, yet to be an inspector with two cars, one called alfa and one called gbenga(gbengen) he gbengbe has an well fornished hotel and he can’t construct a good sentence, they have taken lives because of their greediness, please Mr ig those mentioned has to be cut to order and asked how they acquire those properties!!!!

  2. The IGP I knew is diligent, honest and very intelligent, let the youth follow the modules of operation and as subject to the current protest, the only area I can advise the police institution is that, let there be true relationship and communication between the Nigeria citizen and the you especially, and the Nigeria police should extend the reform to other units in the system, like anti kidnapping department investigating case of fraud, anti robbry department investigating the case of assault, homicide department investigating the case of matrimonial, anti theft investigating the case of money laundering,JWC investigating the case of traffic, each units has to work according to it’s proffesion.
Stop and search should continue on our highways but any officer on duty must wear uniform with identity.
Let anti robbery department continue investigating it’s suspects, there is no need to form another robbery units when the department is already existing unless it’s being scraped.
Give your boys and their team leader orientation on how to address people, like headquarter in Abuja lious edet house, when you get there one wld like his or her child to become police, there is complete regards for human in that place,go to area 10 force headquarter, the Interpol,x.squad, anti fraud and so on ,they do follow rules, unlike alagbon here,a very bad eggs full the command, the worst is SARS office G.I.D if they arrest a suspect for stealing and the parents or friend of the suspects go there for bail or to hear his or her offence the next language you will hear is the suspect has been transferred to Abuja, meanwhile they might have eliminated the suspect without trial.this is the area I mentioned above, the new units SWAT must follow the rules by charging any case to court of competent jurisdiction.
The same should apply to other units.
All the right units in each stations must not involve in bribery and the language of bail is free must be the first in their duties.the harrasment and extral judicial killing was too much, searching the electronic devices must end.
I hereby commends the youths for their boldness and struggles to safe more life’s and protection of our common masses who has no power except God,I think both parties have learnt their lessons now, let’s move Nigeria forward and forget what has gone or happened in the past.
    God bless our youths
    God bless Nigeria.
