Join Media And Ensure Positive Portrayal Of Islam, Veteran Journalist Tasks Muslims

A seasoned journalist and public speaker has called for more Muslims to join the media industry and improve their media literacy as a way of ensuring positive media portrayal of Islam in Nigeria.

Speaking at the Professional Monthly Forum (PMF) of the Guild of Muslim Professionals (GMP), Ibadan Branch on Sunday, the Deputy Director of Programmes, Voice of Nigeria, Alhaji Abdur– Razaq Abdus–Salam advised Muslims to acquire proper understanding of their religion in addition to adequate media literacy and regular participation on media programmes in order to win the modern day media war against their religion.

He also lamented the strategies adopted for the reportage of  Islamic issues globally, which include propaganda, attenuation, deny and dump, interviewing pseudo Muslims on germane Islamic affairs, and denying Muslims the opportunity to comment on issues affecting them and their religion.

Speaking further, the veteran called on Imams to make judicious use of the mosque as a God–given mass media by giving up to date sermons that address contemporary issues in the society thereby setting agenda for the country and the world at large.

At the programme which was graced by Muslim professionals from all walks of life, Mr.  Ayoola, the Head of Procurement Unit, Voice of Nigeria, and Engr. B. O Tijani, the head, Department of Electrical/Electronics, The Polytechnic, Ibadan both commended the organisers while stressing that forums like this are capable of achieving outstanding feats for the Muslim community in the nation.
