Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties in Osun State, Olalekan Badmus has distributed food items to vulnerable residents of Osogbo Local Government as part of measures to cushion the effect of the pandemic lockdown in the state.
The distribution, which commenced on Tuesday is expected to cover all the 20 wards in the council.
Among the food items distributed are beans, semovita and other most consumed delectables.
The Commissioner said: “It became imperative to also consider those whose main source of livelihood was going out to take up menial jobs but are no longer able to do so due to the realities of this time. The burden of taking care of this bunch should not be solely the government’s.
“If others too who are affluent could thread this part, fear of some people taking advantage of this period to rob us would not surface at all. Baba Awolowo once said that the children of poor who are left uncatered for will someday grow up to become social disturbers. This move, I believe is in line with the wise man’s ideology.”
Badmus however charged them to abide by the social distancing rule religiously as scientists are working round the clock to find a cure for Covid-19.
He emphasised that, washing of hands with soap and water, avoiding crowd, applying sanitizers and keeping clean hygiene are the only solutions available for not contacting the pandemic.
