Three people were feared dead on Wednesday in an accident that occurred along Toro Road, Co-operative Area of Modakeke, Osun State.
Five others also sustained injuries as a vehicle that lost control ran over them.
According to a trader in the area, Mopelola Razaq, the accident occurred around 8.30 p.m., when a Nissan Xtera Jeep, with registration no MUS 741 DR, ran over some people, including roadside traders.
She said an irate mob descended on the driver immediately and beat him till he became unconscious.
She added that the mob later set ablaze the vehicle involved in the accident before policemen arrived the scene.
When contacted, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Folasade Odoro, confirmed the accident, saying that eight people, including a baby, were knocked down by a driver.
She said the identity of the driver had yet to be ascertained.
Odoro said, “The yet-to-be-identified driver of the said vehicle lost control and subsequently knocked down eight persons, including a baby.
“In a spontaneous reaction, an irate crowd set the vehicle ablaze before the intervention of the Police.
“While three of the victims were feared dead on the spot, they and others involved were, however, rushed to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex for medical attention.
