A member of the House of Representative, representing Chanchaga Federal Constituency in Niger State, Hon. Umaru Mohammed Bago has declared that there are constitutional facts that back his aspiration to be the Speaker of the 9th Assembly of the lower chamber.
The lawmaker said the nation’s constitution supports fairness and equity in the distribution of principal offices.
In a statement made available to journalists, Hon. Bago said, “let’s be truthful to ourselves as Nigerians, whether we are lawmakers or doctors or artisans, young or old, Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba, if we truly want a united nation, we cannot cherry pick with the constitution, arbitrarily choosing what we accept or reject as suits our fancy.
“Our constitution is not a book of suggestions, but statutes that must be obeyed by all and not in breach; the contents are irreducible minimums to guarantee justice, equity, fairness, right to express oneself, right to association etc.
“The full compliance with this, is the foundation that great nations stand upon; not arbitrariness of “crossing the bridge when we get there”
“The aspiration to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives (9th Assembly) draws strength from these facts.”
