A group, Ijesa South Patriots, has denied the alleged association of the member of the House of Representatives representing Ijesa South Federal Constituency in Osun State, Sanya Omirin, and recently arrested notorious political thug, Olabode Owoeye, well known as Bode Itaapa, in the state.
Owoeye was recently arrested by the officers of the Osun State Police Command.
The Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, in a statement on Friday, said police operatives arrested Owoeye and other suspects after rigorous surveillance since February 2024.
Opalola quoted the suspect as confessing, during interrogation, that other members of his Aye confraternity were responsible for the abduction and killing of the victims inside the bush.
He, according to the police, also admitted that his group was the political thugs working for Omirin.
Reacting to the allegation, the Ijesa South Patriots described the suspect’s claims as absurd, stressing that Omirin’s name was not mentioned by any of the suspects in connection with the crimes they committed.
The group, in a statement on Saturday, said, “In fact, Olabode Owoeye popularly known as Bode Itaapa never mentioned Hon Omirin’s name as his sponsor. Why is the Police so keen on implicating the House of Representatives’ member?
“We however consider it appropriate to put the record straight, hence the need to seek answers to some questions.
“First, going by the piece read by the Osun Police Spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, the Police Command in findings, concluded that the alleged crime committed by the suspects was fueled by a confraternity war involving rival groups. It is then pertinent to ask, is Hon Sanya Omirin a member of one of the cult groups involved in the confraternity war? The answer is NO!
“Secondly, why are the APC members in the state having the possession of the speech would be read by the police on the day suspects that they wish would implicate a PDP chieftain, about 2 days before the event would eventually take place? When did APC members in Osun become part of the Police structure in the state to the point that they would have access to speech that would be read at the suspects parade by the Force?
“Thirdly, we want to put some events of the past on record: It is public knowledge that Hon Omirin was attacked during the 2022 gubernatorial election, and he escaped death by the whisker by some hoodlums.
“This set of hoodlums also attempted to kill Omirin during the 2023 elections. In fact, his police escort was shot in the incident. Omirin can’t be a sponsor of these hoodlums and they would be attacking him.
“It is pertinent to ask what the Osun APC nay Ijesa South APC wants from Omirin? The APC knows as a matter of fact that with Hon. Sanya Omirin as a free citizen, they can never win Ijesha South.
“It should be noted that police is not an appendage of APC and in-as-much-as, we will encourage security agents to do their jobs, we insist that they must do that with uttermost professionalism. The real sponsors of hoodlums in Ijesa South should be identified and exposed.”
The Ijesa South Patriots, however, called on President Bola Tinubu to prevail on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, “to intervene and instruct the Osun State Police Command to leave Hon Sanya Omirin alone, and stop acting the script of Osun APC.”
“We also want to charge the APC to accept defeat in 2022 and 2023 elections and move on, because no amount of blackmail will stop the towering political status of Hon Sanya Omirin, who has grown from being a Council Secretary to where God and the people of Ijesha South has placed him,” the group added.
