A student at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo, Oyo State, was beaten to death by some of his colleagues for allegedly stealing a mobile phone belonging to one of them.
A source within the institution informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the student, identified simply as Alex, was beaten by his colleagues from around 10 PM on Friday until 6 AM on Saturday, after they discovered he had stolen the phone.
The source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the university, said that in addition to stealing the phone, the student had also transferred a certain amount of money from the phone to another account.
Several short video clips seen by a NAN correspondent showed a male student beating his colleague, who was rolling on the floor, with a cane. Another student could be heard shouting “harder, harder,” urging him to beat the student more.
The source added that the students were enraged by the theft of the phone and the transfer of money from the owner’s account.
The source further stated that the deceased was thrown out of the hostel on Friday evening and was found dead early on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the school authorities have announced the expulsion of the students involved in what they termed the ‘fight that led to the death of a fellow student’.
In a statement issued on Saturday evening by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Atoyebi, the institution denied the circulating reports that those involved in the killing were members of a secret cult.
As the students were beating him, they could be heard saying “harder, harder, na you abi no be you, na you abi no be you”, this was continued in a repeated manner during the jungle justice.
Alex was the only child of his mother.
