As the closest level of government to the people, the Iwo Local Government authorities distributed a large pool of food items to the representatives of numerous interest groups that make up thousands of households in Iwo, Osun State.
Following a communication by the local council leadership, all the representatives of about 64 different groups converged at the secretariat on Saturday where the relief items, purposed to cushion the immediate effect of the federal government’s petrol subsidy removal policy, were handed over to them.
Hon. Moshood Kabir Adekunle, Caretaker Chairman of Iwo Central Local Government, Hon. Adesina Tiamiyu, the Iwo East LCDA chairman and Hon. Amoo Oyeniyi Olaewe, chairman Iwo West LCDA who personally supervised the exercise today in order to ensure that no demography was left out in the process.
The process followed a clear distribution template that included religious associations, labour unions, artisan groups, political parties, youth, NUT, NUP, Civil Society and market bodies, transporters as well as student organisations.
Speaking at the event, the chairmen appreciated all the groups for promptly turning up and cooperating with the government in its bid to make the process transparent and open.
“Thank you for coming in your numbers as leaders of your various constituencies. I believe that with your presence, majority of households in our community are represented here and I am confident that they all will feel the impact of this gesture,” Kabiru said.
Enjoining the leaders to replicate the open process in the final distribution, “We know that this is the second to the final level of distribution. We put our trust in you that you will be just and fair to all. Let everyone be equal in the final distribution.”
All the representatives thanked the government for putting the people first in the distribution, showing its commitment to their welfare. They promised to facilitate the final distribution without delay.
The chairman of National Union of Road and Transport Workers, Iwo branch, Chief Akeem Seriki said “We are assuring the government that we will not betray our people when handing the food items out to them.”
On Friday, the local government leadership received a consignment of 284 bags of rice from the state government led by His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, along with guideline necessary to ensure even distribution and reach of the relief items to cushion the immediate effect of the subsidy removal on Nigerians.
The chairman called on Iwo residents to report to his office if they observe any anomaly during the final distribution in any part of the town under his watch.
