Despite being knocked out of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland say they have scores to settle with the Super Falcons ahead of their last group game on Monday.
The Republic of Ireland’s World Cup campaign came to an end on Wednesday, after they were beaten 2-1 by Canada in their second consecutive loss of the tournament while Nigeria stunned co-hosts Australia 3-2 to go top of the group on goal difference.
When both sides meet on Monday, Nigeria need at least a draw to advance to the next round, but the eliminated Irish are bent on playing for pride.
“You will never see us give up,” swinger Marissa Sheva told BBC.
“I am so proud of this team for that reason. We will go into that next game in Brisbane and we will fight like hell.
“We will try to come back with a result for Ireland, the fans who came out here to watch us and to show just how good this team is.
“You saw it at times. We’re so close to being one of the best teams in the world, everyone can see that.
“With this being our first tournament, the fact we are so disappointed that we held Canada to a 2-1 and it could have been a very different result, I think you see that.
“We’ll be back but we definitely have business to finish with Nigeria.”
Nigeria will face Ireland at the Brisbane Stadium by 11 am on Monday.
