A member of the Old Students Association of Baptist High School, Iwo, Osun State, Mr. Adisa Kabiru Adeniyi (Kulukulu) has said that Old Students’ Associations has a great role to play in developing Nigeria’s educational sector.
Amiloaded gathered this through a paper titled; “The Role of Old Students’ Association in Educational Development in Nigeria”, which was presented by Adisa Kabiru on Thursday at the Baptist High School’s Old Students Association meeting in Iwo.
Kulukulu said alumni associations are about ties that bind and in the words of Elizabeth Foley: “The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.”
Kabiri suggested that Alumni association members can serve in the School Board because of their wealth of experience, adding that such a person has better understanding of the system as someone who had passed through the same system.
While stating how Old Students could help the current ones, Adisa said, “As a member of alumni associations, you can volunteer your professional services for conferences, seminars and workshops on key issues that will change the sector especially those who are gurus in education.
This will not only yield positive but sustainable results as it is easy to volunteer and grow the educational system. Alumni through members’ wealth of experience can play vital role in monitoring and evaluation of education reform.”
He added that, “Some alumni associations go to extent of registering as nonprofit making in Nigeria with Corporate Affairs Commission and oversea including United State of America as 501 C 3 in order to get grants, donations and corporate sponsors.
“Even those alumni with political ambitions can use it as a stepping stone and gain community entrance. It can also boost their image, appeal to the electorates and constituents to vote for them during elections based on what they have offered the communities.”
