A human right activist, Adisa Kabiru has call on concerned individuals, government and stakeholders in Nigeria’s educational sector to intensify efforts in saving the nation’s educational sector from total collapse.
Adisa Kabiru who is also known as Kulukulu said that the root of the problem in the sector was the taking over of the schools in the 70’s from missionaries and private owners who used to be in charge, adding that schools that were previously maintained by tithes and fisebililah money of congregants suddenly found themselves at the mercy of the inconsistent government.
Kulukuku said since the 70’s, the educational system of the Yorubaland has been gradually deteriorating with Standards falling with buildings, infrastructure poorly maintained, and teachers poorly remunerated. Adding that the pace of the deterioration picked up in the 90s because of the military government’s poor policies and the corruption that had taken over governance in the country.
He advised that the way out is to restructure schools in the country, stating that the government should adopt a primary school and a secondary school per every local government every year and turn around their infrastructure.
The Iwo born Comrade prescribed that a community management board consisting of teachers, parents and community leaders should be constituted to manage the schools. He said the board must be allowed to levy charges on community members and pupils to maintain the facility and procure materials if necessary.
Kabiru emphasized the need to take radical decisions to bring public schools at par with their private counterparts in other to uphold the country’s educational sector.
