Employers Cannot Grant Travel Permission – NYSC Osun Coordinator Tells Corps Members

Urges Them to Uphold Discipline and Adhere to Regulations

The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps in Osun State, Mr. Agbor Ndoma Obim, has reiterated the importance of discipline, compliance with NYSC regulations, and personal responsibility among Corps Members. He made these remarks during a debriefing session at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Ede today.

Mr. Agbor commended Corps Members for their good conduct throughout the Orientation Course and assured them that their welfare remains a priority. He emphasised that postings were done based on their academic disciplines and the needs of employers, urging them to adapt and contribute meaningfully to their Places of Primary Assignment.

Reiterating the importance of discipline, he cautioned against insubordination to NYSC officials or employers. “An employer has the right to query you and report to us. This process is designed to instill discipline and leadership skills in you,” he noted.

The State Coordinator warned that employers do not have the authority to grant permission for travel, emphasising that Corps Members must obtain approval from the State Coordinator before embarking on any journey. “Employers have no right to give you permission to travel. Ensure you follow due process and do not exceed the approved time for your leave. In case of an emergency, notify your Local Government Inspector,” he instructed.

He also cautioned against absenteeism, stating that three months of unauthorised absence would be considered abscondment, attracting severe sanctions from the Scheme.

On security, he advised Corps Members to remain vigilant and implement the security tips learned during the Orientation Course. “Security is everyone’s business. Move in pairs, avoid night parties, and stay away from activities that could put you at risk. Remember your parents’ sacrifices and investments in you,” he warned.

Mr. Agbor urged Corps Members to carry their NYSC identity cards at all times, maintain proper records at their PPAs, and adhere to NYSC protocols. He reminded them that monthly biometric clearance, conducted between the 1st and 10th of each month, must be done in person, with clearance letters submitted beforehand.

Additionally, he cautioned against uploading NYSC-related content on social media without authorisation, emphasising that unauthorised use of the NYSC uniform in online posts would not be tolerated.

The State Coordinator underscored the significance of the Community Development Service (CDS) programme, reminding Corps Members that they are not to fund personal projects from their allowances but should instead mobilise resources from their host communities. “Leave a good footprint in your host community; it will benefit you and enhance the relevance of the Scheme,” he encouraged.

On financial independence, he advised Corps Members to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program seriously. “SAED is personal; there is no designated day for it. Make time after CDS or on weekends to engage in it,” he said, warning against truancy at PPAs under the guise of attending SAED training.

The session concluded with the presentation of commendation letters to the three Corps Camp Directors and the overall Parade Commander in recognition of their outstanding leadership during the Orientation programme.

Mr. Agbor urged Corps Members to remain disciplined, focused, and hardworking, emphasising that their service year is a continuous process with no breaks. “Be patient, complete your service year diligently, and always follow the appropriate channels of communication,” he concluded.

The event also featured the introduction of Zonal Inspectors and Local Government Inspectors by the Assistant Director of Corps Inspection and Monitoring, Mrs. Adesina Omoboade.
