Election Observers Praise Osun Voters, OSSIEC Amid Police Disruption Concerns

The Coalition of Election Observer Groups has praised the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) and residents of Osun State for their calm and orderly behavior during the local government elections held on February 22, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Sunday, the coalition highlighted the determination of voters to uphold democratic values, even in the face of alleged intimidation and provocations from certain political figures and security personnel.

The group’s chairman, Declan Ihekaire voiced disappointment over reports of the Nigerian Police allegedly threatening voters and discouraging participation. He also criticized the unwarranted arrests of some OSSIEC officials during the process.

Despite these issues, the observer groups lauded OSSIEC for its professionalism and resolve in managing the election effectively.

While acknowledging minor logistical hiccups, they pointed to interference by the Nigerian Police as the primary cause of disruptions, rather than any failure on the commission’s part.

The groups reiterated the vital role of local government in delivering essential services and fostering grassroots progress within a democracy. They applauded the Osun State Government for holding the election, viewing it as a clear sign of its dedication to strengthening democratic practices.

The Coalition of Election Observer Groups urged other states to promptly organize their own local government elections to encourage widespread civic engagement.

They congratulated the election winners and advised those unhappy with the outcome to pursue lawful channels for resolution while preserving peace.

Reaffirming their dedication to transparent and credible electoral processes, the coalition pledged to keep advocating for democratic principles that bolster governance and accountability.

They encouraged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to view their positions as opportunities to serve the public faithfully.

In his remarks, Comrade Olowu Emmanuel advised aggrieved parties who are not satisfied with the conduct of the election to seek redress in court while maintaining peace and order in the state.
