..says he has been discharged since yesternight

The Government of Osun has confirmed the health status of the Correspondent of The Nation Newspaper, Toba Adedeji who was shot on the thigh yesterday by an overzealous armed policeman.

The Government also confirmed the discharge of the victim who was rushed to the hospital after the incident that occurred at the popular Olaiya junction, Osogbo, the state capital, on Tuesday morning.

Recall that Governor Adegboyega Oyetola had in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, condemned in strongest terms the shooting of the innocent citizens by some trigger-happy police officers.

Adedeji was reportedly shot by some overzealous policemen who were trying to disperse a group of people who had gathered to mourn the death of Abiola Afolabi, who was allegedly killed by police officers in April.

Fielding questions from journalists on Wednesday morning, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matter, Mrs. Abiodun Ige, expressed gratitude to God that the incident didn’t claim any life as the identified journalist had been discharged since yesternight.

Ige enjoined the security agencies to always discharge their constitutional responsibilities with human face and high sense of professionalism, decency and civility noting that the State under the watch of Governor Oyetola would not in anyway condone any act of lawlessness from anyone regardless of position or status.

She also dislcosed that the State government had instituted a fact-finding team to investigate the incident in order to mete out adequate punishment on whoever is found culpable.

“We thank God that the identified victim is much alive, hale and hearty. He has been discharged since yesternight. But it is pertinent to place on record that the administration of Governor Oyetola would not in anyway condone any act of lawlessness from anyone regardless of status or position in the State.

“We therefore urge security agencies in the State most importantly the police to be more professional in the discharge of their duties.

“As a government, we are not resting on our oars to continually guarantee the security and protection of lives and property of the citizens. This is our avowed commitment and we are not going to renege on this.

“We implore police and other sister agencies to support the government in its resolve to maintain the status of Osun as the safest State in the country”, she added.
