May Day: Senate President Urges Speedy Resolution Of FG, ASUU Faceoff

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has called for a speedy and amicable resolution of the ongoing faceoff between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Lawan, in a statement to commemorate this year’s May Day, said the move was to ensure that universities reopen for learning and research.

Government-owned universities nationwide have been shut for over two months following a strike by the ASUU and other unions.

The unions said the strike action was to compel the government to implement various agreements reached with them.

But both parties failed to reach a truce after several negotiations.

“We should always be mindful that no society can make meaningful progress without industrial peace and harmony,” Lawan was quoted as saying in the statement signed by his media aide, Ola Awoniyi.

He hailed Nigerian workers for their patriotic cooperation with the government and other institutions in the collective efforts to address societal challenges.
