Reducing Void Votes: Group Organises Training For Osun Grassroots Women

In order to reduce the rate of void votes usually witnessed at elections in Nigeria, an organization, the Nigeria Women Trust Fund has organized a two-day workshop for grassroots women.

The workshop, which is in partnership with European Union and other reputable organizations, was aimed at reaching out to the women in the state and train them on voter’s education, needs for peaceful election and ways to minimize the void votes during the election.

Addressing newsmen in Osogbo, the Chief Executive Officer of the organization, Mrs. Mufuliat Fijabi revealed that the target of the programme is the women at the grassroots who according to her, are part of major stakeholders in elections.

Fijabi added that among the expected results is the availability of adequate information for the public in general, and women in particular.

According to her, “we are having a women-to-women training on voter education across the grassroots in Osun. Presently, we are training some women who will in turn go out to train women across the nooks and crannies of the state. Among the topics we emphasize on are voter education, election procedures and other areas that are key to successful, fair, credible and acceptable election.

“We believe that this will avail the voters the adequate information on voter’s education, reduce the number of void votes and other information needed for peaceful and acceptable election”, she added.

Mrs Fijabi commended the participation of the invited trainees and trainers and urged the society to continuously advocating for and sensitizing the women on participation in politics.

“Women participation in politics should not be during the election only, they need to be more active in the governance. The advocacy and sensitization of women to participate in politics should be increased.”
